Around 500 parents and students gathered at a church in Chicago tonight for a community meeting to protest the potential closing of their neighborhood school.
Today, CPS released a list of 129 schools on a list to shut down. That’s down from 330.
The crowd at the meeting in the North Lawndale church was outraged, furious and determined to see their schools stay open.
They feel their neighborhoods are being abandoned by the mayor and Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett. Not a single school board member was present at the meeting.
It is the first of 14 community meetings over the next two weeks.
People protesting the closings have about six weeks to get that message across when the city releases its final list of schools on the chopping block after the school year.
