It happened at 7 p.m. Monday on Wilmot Road.

It was raining when their 2007 black, Chevy Trailblazer went off the road and into a yard.

The SUV hit a tree and the tree fell on top of it.

The driver, 16-year-old Joel Wittkamp from Antioch, and 17-year-old Ashley Seay from Lindenhurst both died at the scene.   They had just started dating earlier this month.

Flags were lowered at Lakes Community High School, where Ashley was a Junior and crisis counselors are available to students coping with the loss.

It was the same scene at Antioch High School, where Wittkamp also was a Junior.  He was on the football team, which has scheduled a special meeting for after school today.

Lake County Sheriff’s police say rainy conditions appear to have contributed to the accident.  It’s not clear how fast the SUV was going before it veered off the road.
