NIU police chief fired
Northern Illinois University’s police chief has been fired.
The dismissal of Donald Grady comes three months after he was put on paid leave as the school reviewed the police department’s handling of a high-profile rape case.
An NIU police officer under Grady’s command was charged with sexually assaulting a freshman at the school.
A judge ruled an officer purposely withheld key evidence that could have cleared the defendant.
Many hailed Grady as a hero for his handling of a mass shooting on campus five years ago.
Grady’s attorney says he will fight the dismissal.
