A Winter Storm warning for heavy snow is in effect until midnight Tuesday for northeast Illinois including the Chicago area, southeast Wisconsin and northwest Indiana.
As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, O’Hare Airport reported a new snowfall record for March 5 with 4.1 inches. The old record was 3.8 inches in 2002.
The latest runs of out the Chicago Weather Center in-house RPM models indicate that another 4-6 inches of snow is yet to fall in the Chicago Metro area Tuesday evening.
With areas total already in the 2 to 7 inch range, that puts the potential final snow totals for this storm in the 5 to 12 inch range. As the snow continues this evening northeast winds will increase to 20-30 mph with higher gusts causing the snow to blow and drift.
The snow is expected to taper off to flurries later this evening and wind down by midnight.
