Local diplomat honored at State Department

Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry paid tribute to fallen diplomats, including River Forest native Anne Smedinghoff on Friday.

Her name was added to a memorial at the State Department, along with the names of those killed in the September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Smedinghoff died in a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan last month.

She was delivering books to schools for the foreign service.

Biden called the victims’ passion for their work “astounding.”
