Commuters can expect heavy delays on the north side this weekend as crews move a giant bridge through the city streets.
The bridge is being moved as part of the Bloomingdale Trail project, which will create a 2.7 mile trail along Bloomingdale Ave between Ashland and Ridgeway.
At the end of March, crews removed the bridge over Ashland Ave and restored it. This weekend, the restored bridge will be placed over Western Ave near Bloomingdale Ave.
The move will start at 5:30a.m. Saturday morning and should end around 8:30 a.m. An 80-wheel flatbed truck will take the bridge SB on Ashland, WB on North Ave to Western. Commuters can expect rolling closures as the bridge makes its way to its new location, moving around 5mph.
Western will be closed between St. Paul and Moffat throughout the weekend for the placement of the new bridge. Parking bans are in effect along the move route and all CTA buses in the area are being re-routed.
The Bloomingdale Trail (commonly known as The 606) will open for public use in the Fall of 2014.
