A 4-year-old girl in Washington helped solve a crime after her babysitter orchestrated an invasion of her home.
“They told us to get out of the house because they wanted to steal stuff,” the girl, Abby, told KCPQ-TV after the break-in Wednesday. She said two male suspects stole her kitty bank and her iPod.
Investigators from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said the girl’s babysitter, 17, planned the robbery with her boyfriend and another male.
The babysitter told police that two armed black men broke into the home, and one looked like the next door neighbor, Cody Oaks. Police questioned Oaks for several hours, but Abby knew the truth. She told the police the suspects had white skin, not black, which put the babysitter’s story into question.
“Literally in 30 seconds, she changed everything that had been going on for five, six hours,” Abby’s mother said.
The babysitter confessed, and she and the two others were arrested and could face charges for robbery, burglary and perjury.
Oaks was released. “It’s kind of sad because I don’t think [the babysitter] realizes the dangerous position it put me in,” he said.
Abby’s stolen items were returned thanks to her “superhero” actions, though she maintains it was the worst day of her life.
This foray into sleuthing may be a one-time thing for Abby, who has other plans for her future—helping people as a doctor.
