Streets reopen in Loop after construction crew hits old gas main

CHICAGO --Several streets in The Loop were shut down this afternoon after  a construction crew struck a gas main near State and Madison.

No one was injured but it quickly became a level 2 hazmat situation.

The gas company came to the scene to cap the main.

The fire department says it was an old, unused underground gas main.

Fire department says they are forcing air into the main to make sure there is no gas inside it.

 

The fire department is checking all building down here and so far they have no gas readings.
