Program aims to feed children all summer long

For many kids, summer is a time play, get out enjoy the sunshine and just be a kid.

But for some students who rely on school meal programs for the food they need each day, Summer can be a tough time.

During the school year, 22 million kids get free or low cost meals in Illinois. In the summer, less than 18 percent of those get food assistance.

Summer Meals in Illinois is a program  to help fill void.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is one of about a dozen program sponsors, which has seen a skyrocketing need in recent years for access to quality nutrition.  It is a need which doesn’t end when school lets out for the summer.

Summer Meals is a federally funded program operated on the state level and available to kids 18 and under at hundreds of sites across the area and across the state every day.

There are more than 1000 sites offering summer meals in our immediate area alone.
