Summer initiative aims to curb South Side violence

CHICAGO -- It’s like the summer version of the Safe Passage program we see during the school year, but there's more to the Building Community Block by Block program in the 3rd and 4th wards.

It also includes a youth jobs program.

The Safe Passage program is through the park district and includes a number of parks throughout the city, including  Ellis, Kennicott, Mandrake, Taylor, Fuller and Anderson Parks here on the South Side.

All of this is an attempt to quell the amount of violence we're seeing in Chicago. So far this year more than 2,100 shootings and nearly 350 people have been killed.

Just since yesterday morning, at least 15 people were shot in the city.

This summer program is scheduled to run through August 12. That's around the time the CPD's safe passage program is set to begin.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel did mention that this is a pilot program that, if successful, would be duplicated throughout the city next summer.
