CHICAGO -- A man who once spoke alongside Mayor Emanuel and Magic Johnson is among the latest victims of Chicago’s gun violence epidemic.
21-year-old Glennell Fairley was playing basketball with a 15-year-old friend at Ogden Park when shots rang out Saturday.
Police say Fairley was shot in the chest and died later at a hospital.
Fairley had worked as a mentor and others called him a shining example.
He spent two summers working and taking classes through the One Summer Chicago youth work program. He learned photography and was known for making friends with everyone he met.
In February 2015, Fairley was chosen to speak alongside Mayor Rahm Emanuel and basketball superstar Magic Johnson at an event promoting One Summer Chicago. His image was part of the marketing of the program which Johnson and Emanuel promoted.
He had recently been enrolled at Richard J Daley College.
As the investigation continues. Police say that the teen Fairley was in the park with Saturday night was shot once in the arm and is going to be OK.
