Swim ban lifted at Chicago-area beaches

CHICAGO -- Most, but not all, beaches in the Chicago area are now open for swimming after an earlier ban.

A swim ban was put in place for all beaches earlier today after heavy rain last night forced the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District to open the lock at Wilmette and the Chicago River.

The opening of the locks meant all beaches were given a swim ban due to high levels of bacteria. Tests are being conducted to determine if the water is safe for swimming.

People were still allowed access to the beaches, just not in the water.

The ban also canceled the annual Great Lake Plunge in Evanston.
