Police seek suspect in fatal shooting of mother

CHICAGO -- Chicago police are searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old mother of two.

Africa Bass was shot and killed in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue early Wednesday morning.

A group of about 100 people gathered for a vigil and march Wednesday night.  They say they're tired of the gun violence in their neighborhood that took Africa's life.

Africa had just moved into the Germano Millgate apartments near East 88th and Burley in the South Chicago neighborhood yesterday.

Family members say around midnight she ran out to run an errand and was walking back home on the sidewalk when shots were fired from a black SUV.

Africa was shot in the back and taken to the hospital where she later died.

“Besides my momma, my sister was the strongest person I knew,” said Africa’s sister Jovanna Jones

Just three days ago, the family escaped a house fire.

The mother of two was looking forward to her son's fifth birthday party, a celebration that was supposed to happen today.

“My nephew is always going to remember his momma died on his birthday. You can't forget that,” Jovanna said.

Neighbors say there have been three other shootings on this same block since June--one of them fatal as well.
