Cancer patient, mother attacked and robbed on Chicago’s West Side

CHICAGO -- A cancer patient and mother of three kids was attacked and robbed on the city's West Side.

Erika Santiago was walking home from a Currency Exchange at Chicago and Kedzie when she was assaulted. She had just received $1,000 to pay her rent. Because she's ill, she depends on disability payments.

She says the attacker choked her, demanded money, and threatened to kill her. She says she couldn't breathe or yell for help. When she saw he had a box cutter in his pants, she gave him the money.

Neighbors chased the suspect away.

The Currency Exchange has surveillance video of the suspect.

She suffered bruises and scratches.

Santiago started a GoFundMe page where people can show their support.
