Purple Heart vets share stories for Library of Congress

CHICAGO --  Soldier Field is glowing with purple light tonight in honor of Purple Heart Day in Illinois.

Earlier today, veterans who received the Purple Heart Medal shared their stories. They were stories of service, told by those who served.

Today, veterans, wounded in the line, shared their personal stories for a public audience.

One by one, Purple Heart medal recipients relived their days in the military -- their injuries, their lives since -- as court reporters from the National Court Reporters Association and Foundation recorded every word on their steno machines.

The transcripts will be given to the Library of Congress.

WGN reporter Sean Lewis has the full story in the video above.
