Safety of West Loop intersection questioned after 2 recent accidents

CHICAGO -- The busy intersection of Washington Boulevard and Carpenter Street  in the West Loop has seen two car accidents since construction fences were erected, limiting the view of drivers.

One fence is around the site of the former Harpo Studios, being torn down to make way for McDonald’s new headquarters building.

Last week after the chain link fence with an opaque wind screen went up, one collision happened within 24 hours.

In the more serious crash, a car smashed through a wooden construction barrier across the street and plunged into a 10-foot pit next to a loft building under renovation. The driver was injured.

Stop signs have been added on Washington, but residents are still concerned that motorists not used to stopping there will miss the signs.

Construction crews have also removed the wind screen so motorists can see through the fence.
