HOMER TOWNSHIP, Ill. — A teen boy from Illinois is recovering after a shark attack in the Bahamas.
According to the Daily Southtown, Johnny Stock, 15, from Homer Township, Ill., was bitten by a shark on Aug. 7 during a snorkeling trip in the Caribbean country.
According to the boy’s father, John Stoch, the family could not get an ambulance or paramedics. They traveled to the hospital in the back of a pickup truck with no emergency lights.
The Daily Southtown reports the shark took off a golf ball-sized chunk out of Johnny’s leg, but missed nerves, tendons and blood vessels.
When he returned home, family and friends greeted him with banners and balloons.
The boy has been recovering and is not in a lot of pain any more, the Daily Southtown reports. However his wounds will still require surgery and physical therapy.
The boy’s father told the Daily Southtown that Johnny is a cross-country athlete, but will not be able to compete this year for Lockport Township High School.
