Emanuel, hundreds of kids attend CPS end-of-summer party

CHICAGO -- Summer is winding down but nobody here was bummed. Hundreds of kids and their parents stopped by for a party thrown by CPS.

For these kids the summer is just about over and it’s time to go back to school.

To celebrate Chicago Public Schools threw a party today at Whittier Elementary on the West Side.

There were games, music and food. Many kids say the summer flew by, but they’re ready for classes to resume.

Parents are ready too.

Even after an assist this summer from Springfield, CPS had to tighten its belt, laying off a thousand teachers and staff. For now, CPS CEO Forrest Claypool says the district’s finances are stable.
