Worried about the Old Farmer’s Almanac winter forecast? Here’s what Tom Skilling says

CHICAGO -- The 200th edition of the Old Farmer's Almanac is out, and it's predicting some downright frigid conditions this winter.

The almanac's forecast says the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Midwest, Ohio Valley, the Middle Atlantic, Northeast and New England all will experience an icy winter.

One key element to the Farmer's Almanac is its long-range weather predictions.

WGN-TV weatherman Tom Skilling shared his thoughts on, and reservations toward, the almanac's forecast and methodology.

"Talk to anyone in the scientific end of our profession," Skilling said. "We look at the Farmer's Almanac forecast the same way we do the groundhog forecast."

Added Skilling, "This is a fun read, but it's not founded in solid science. The methodology they use isn't even clear to us."
