CHICAGO -- The Major Accidents Unit of the Chicago Police Department is looking for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident in Garfield Park last night
So far no one is in custody, but they have a pretty good lead after a police surveillance camera at the corner of Pulaski and west Maypole Avenue captured an image of a white van, with a company and a telephone number on the back.
That number corresponds to an address where the blinds were shut, the door was locked, and no one answered the phone Thursday.
The victim was riding his bicycle home from work at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night.
“It just happened so fast, it happened so fast. Before you know it, he got hit,” said a witness, who asked WGN not to use his name or show face, fearing he could be targeted for speaking out.
Friends of the victim identified him as 58-year old Francisco “Frank” Cruz. Cruz was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
In a community alert, police said they’re still looking for the owner of the van, which likely has damage on its front end.
