Indiana man abandons record-setting swim across Lake Michigan after storms

CHICAGO —┬áStorms forced a Northwest Indiana man to abandon his attempt at swimming across Lake Michigan.

Scott Wolford, 51, began his attempt at a record-setting swim around 5 a.m. Thursday at Ohio Street Beach.

After battling storms and waves for 14 hours and 58 minutes — he gave up.

Wolford planned on swimming 120-miles to St. Joseph, Michigan and back.

He says he usually averages two-miles-per-hour, but the weather slowed him down.

He said quitting was a tough call to make.

He attempted the record-swim to bring awareness to the importance of clean water.
