Residents return to building where 3 young sisters, man killed in deadly fire

CHICAGO -- Residents of half of the building on South Essex damaged by a fatal arson fire are returning to their apartments to see if any of their belongings can be salvaged.

Other tenants are being kept away, because their units are too badly damaged to reenter.

Three young sisters, ages 3-months, 4 and 7-years-old, and a 56-year-old man died when the fire broke out Tuesday morning in the building at 81st and Essex on the city's Southeast Side.

Investigators quickly determined the deadly fire was deliberately set.  A person of interest was released by police Thursday.

But the father of one of the young victims, Shawn Staples tells WGN News police told him they have several people they are still investigating.  Staples says he was assured investigators want to cross all the T’s and dot all the I’s before any charges are brought.

A GoFundMe site has been set up for the victims.
