CHICAGO -- September got off to a violent start.

A 46-year-old father of 12 was shot multiple times in the city's North Side neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Richard Castillo was heading to a gas station on the 2000 Block of West Diversey to buy cigarettes around 4:20 a.m.

Police say a black Honda Civic pulled up beside Castillo and someone in the car started yelling gang slogans, then opened fire.

Castillo was hit in the back and the abdomen.

His family says Castillo is a hard working man who doesn't have any gang affiliations.

"He's usually out early because he works in the morning.  He works at 7 in the morning so he gets ready at 5.  So he's usually outside,"  said Marilyn Rodriguez, one of Castillo's 12 children.

No one is in custody for the shooting police say is gang-related.

Castillo underwent hours of surgery at Illinois Masonic Hospital.
