CHICAGO – A man is in custody in the fatal shooting of an 80-year-old man whose body was found outside a senior housing complex on the South Side.

Police say the man was found dead, shot in the face outside the Senior Suites of Rainbow Beach near 77th and Exchange around 6:30 a.m. Monday.

The building is located across the street from Metra's South Shore line and according to its website, caters to men and women 62 and over in a secure, safe apartment facility.

Several residents identify the man as Allen H. Smith. They say they heard Smith and another male resident arguing outside after 1 a.m. and then heard gunshots.

They say the victim was a retired pastor from Gary who had been living in the building for about 10 years and would often hold services at the Senior Suites.
Police say the man in custody is a fellow resident and was in a motorized wheel chair scooter at the time of the incident.

Charges are expected.
