$1,000 reward offered for information in shooting of elderly man

CHICAGO -- Neighbors in a Southwest Side community are taking action to find who shot and robbed a senior citizen while he was watering his lawn.

71-year-old Fred Laguardia is recovering from surgery today after being shot in the stomach yesterday outside his home in the city’s Marquette Park neighborhood.

It was a little after 11 a.m. when Laguardia was approached by two suspects on bikes.

Home surveillance video shows the two men attempting to rob Laguardia.

Police say they wanted his money but he refused to give it up. There was a struggle and he was shot.

A few minutes later, park district workers came to his aid.

Laguardia was taken to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

The suspects are still at large and activist Andrew Holmes joined by members of the clergy and friends are turning up the heat. They want the suspects to turn themselves in or have someone tip off police off as to where they can be found.

A group canvassed the area passing out flyers and knocking on doors asking people to help police get a break in this case.

There is a $1000 reward being offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to an arrest and charges.  Anyone with any information is asked to call 1-800-UTellUs (1-800-883-5587)
