CHICAGO -- Drinking water in Chicago and the collar counties has elevated or unsafe levels of the cancer-causing chemical chromium-6, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group.
The EWG study found more than two-thirds of Americans are at risk for drinking water contaminated with the chemical, which gained more widespread recognition from the movie "Erin Brockovich."
The Environmental Working Group analyzed water tests taken by utilities around the country from 2013 to 2015. Unsafe levels were found in all of the 50 states.
Researchers say water supplies serving 218 million Americans contained higher levels of chromium-6 than scientists in California have deemed safe.
