MUNDELEIN -- Family gathered at their north suburban Mundelein home Sunday to mourn the loss of 25-year-old George Korchev, who was killed during a shooting in Champaign in the early morning hours.
Neighbors say Korchev graduated from nearby Mundelien High School and studied nursing at College of Lake County.
“He had this bubbly personality. He was always just willing to help others,” said neighbor Jacob Meier.
Meier, who lives just across the street and is a few years younger than Korchev, said his death hits close to home.
“One of the greatest memories I have of him was when I was 16 or 17 and going to his house for trick or treating and he gave me an extra piece of candy because [he said], ‘your mom helped me out, man, you’re a good kid!’”
Korchev was visiting Champaign and was a bystander when he was cut down, investigators say, by a stray bullet fired off during a fight he had nothing to do with.
“He wanted to help people, that’s all he wanted to do,” Meier said.
