CHICAGO - A 17-year-old girl was shot in the head and killed while riding in the back seat of a car in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood early Saturday morning.
Naome Zuber was a student at Curie High School. She was on her way to a birthday with three of her friends early Saturday morning, seated in the back of this car as it rolled past the corner of 45th and South Wood Streets.
Police say someone on the sidewalk started shooting. A bullet shattered the car window, and hit Zuber in the head. She died shortly after.
She was the oldest of three children in her family. Her parents have set up a GoFundMe page, which describes her as “the sweetest most lovable person” who enjoyed “volleyball, shopping and just being with her friends.”
"I’ve lived here all my life. I’ve lived here for 29 years, and it’s gotten so bad, they need to stop," said witness Yessenia Rodriguez.
Rodriguez said she heard the gunshots rattle the stillness of the night, and she says she feels besieged and helpless.
"We can’t really do anything. We love living in this house, I’ve lived here all my life," she said.
Rodriguez said gang wars are tearing apart the South Side of Chicago: "They need to put all the guns down. They need to talk it over, or call a truce. Stop right there. It’s never been this bad. A lot of my friends from both sides have died. It’s bad, why are you doing this?"
Police have not arrested anyone yet in connection with this killing, or in a separate shooting that killed a 35-year-old man in the Chatham neighborhood. At least 11 others were wounded in shootings since just before 9 p.m. Friday night.
So far, Chicago police have only solved about 20 percent of the city’s more than 500 homicides.
