Hundreds gather at memorial for teen found burned on Chicago’s West Side

CHICAGO -- It was a tearful goodbye Saturday to 15-year-old Demetrius Griffin at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on the city's West Side.

"Demetrius' life matters a great deal because he is love, and he's been well loved," said Rev. Marshall Hatch at the memorial.

The horrific discovery came two weeks ago. After Griffin missed curfew on a Friday night, police later found his remains in an alley in the 5500 block of West Cortez, burned beyond recognition.

"Demetrius did not deserve this," Riley said.

Relatives say Griffin had a sensitive spirit and a love of animals. He had just started his freshman year at Steinmetz College Prep after graduating from Brunson Elementary.

While the police investigation continues, family and friends are leaning on faith.
