Off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s officer among three injured in Gold Coast shooting

CHICAGO - Chicago police are questioning a person of interest after a shooting in the Gold Coast that sent three people to the hospital, including an off-duty sheriff’s deputy.

Police say the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of North State St., but didn't provide further details. Witnesses say the shooting happened inside a parking garage off of State St. near Division, and investigators had blocked it off until about 8 a.m.

Ambulances and police flooded State and Division after the shooting, in which an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's Deputy was one of the three victims.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office told WGN one of its department court deputies, who normally works security at the Leighton Criminal Courts building on 26th and California, suffered a graze wound to his head. Chicago police say he's 39 years old and has been with the sheriff’s department for 11 years. The deputy was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized.

A 33-year-old man who was shot in the leg was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital along with and a 30-year-old who was shot in his lower back. All of the victims were in serious condition, but police said they had stabilized by mid-morning.

Residents who live nearby said shootings are picking up in their neighborhood, with some blaming a popular hangout area full of bars and clubs.

"Needless to say, we’re a little bit distressed about it,” said resident Doris Frankel.

Frankel said the uptick also falls in line with the rest of Chicago.

“I really don’t know what’s causing it to come to the Gold Coast. I just think that I’m not surprised,” she said.

There are no word on any arrests at this time.
