Man’s body pulled from North Side pond

CHICAGO - The body of an unidentified man was recovered from a pond in the Lincoln Square neighborhood Sunday morning, according to police.

A passing resident called 911 around 8 a.m. Sunday to report a body floating in the pond at the West Ridge Nature Preserve located at 5801 N. Western Avenue around, police said. The pond is just west of the historic Rosehill Cemetery.

The preserve is normally a peaceful retreat near an otherwise busy intersection of Peterson and Western, neighbors say.

“It’s a good place to come and relax..Just for a quick walk. See some birds and turtles,” said Pat Xerikos, who lives in the neighborhood. “I’m hoping it was an accident.”

The Chicago Police Marine Unit responded and removed the body from the water. Police say it was a man between 20 and 30 years old who had been floating face down. They said they are investigating, and have not identified the body at this time.
