CHICAGO -- A driver allegedly sped through a red light and plowed into a taxi on the near North Side, killing himself and the veteran cab driver.
It happened just after 3 a.m. on Wednesday at Oak and Clark.
The taxi driver was 52 year-old Mekonnen Kassa, of Rogers Park.
Police say the driver of a Hyundai Sonata, identified as 40 year-old Sungde Joof, was traveling south on Clark at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a red light. Joof rear ended the City Service Cab.
A colleague at City Service Taxi said Kassa was a hard working immigrant and family man, who drove for the company for nearly twenty years.
