Wild, windy weather collapses canopy at suburban gas station

ALSIP, Ill. -- Wild weather including high winds whipped up all kinds of problems across Chicagoland Monday, including a narrow escape for a couple of motorists in the south suburbs.

At a Citgo gas station near 117th St. and Pulaski, two cars were gassing up under an awning when strong winds knocked it over.  Luckily, witnesses say the two people who were pumping gas ran away just in time as the structure fell. The miraculously undamaged cars will be removed Tuesday.

Strong winds wreaked havoc elsewhere in the city as well. On the North Side, traffic shut down both ways on Halsted at Waveland after a window pane was blown out by high winds, scattering glass onto the road below. No injuries were reported there either.

Back at the gas station, the rusty bases of the pillars are visible after they tore free of the concrete, coming down while still holding the awning up. The state fire marshall and insurance adjusters are assessing the scene.
