MORTON GROVE, Ill. -- A north suburban woman was killed in a fiery accident after her SUV was hit by drag racing cars.

Police are investigating a high-speed hit-and-run that claimed the life of a woman in Morton Grove, Illinois.

One neighbor snapped a photo of a car engulfed in a fireball. The collision was so powerful that one of the cars involved appeared to have been ripped into two pieces.

Morton Grove police say the accident happened on Friday night just before 10 p.m. on a stretch of Golf Road between Washington and Shermer.

Witnesses say two cars were drag racing down Golf Road when they collided with an SUV. The 49-year-old woman driving the SUV was killed, and pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as Denise Cavada.

Witnesses told police the driver of one of the cars jumped out and ran away.

In last night’s rain, police with specially trained dogs were searching for the person behind the wheel, as an accident reconstruction team tried to piece together the details of the accident.

Police say the investigation into this fatal hit-and-run accident continues.
