Man killed in Canton explosion identified

CANTON, Ill. -- Authorities have identified a man killed in a natural gas explosion in downstate Illinois.

Security cameras inside some of the local stores show windows shattering as the explosion happened around 5:30 p.m Wednesday in Canton, which is located southwest of Peoria.

Ameren Gas workers were fixing a damaged gas line in an office building at the time.

Arturo Silva Jr., 38, of Mapleton, Ill., died and 12 others were injured.

The blast damaged buildings several blocks away. Apartment buildings nearby were evacuated, and the downtown area is still closed to the public.

The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation.
