Drivers can expect big closures heading in and out of downtown Chicago this weekend due to work at the Jane Byrne Interchange.   Be sure to plan ahead to avoid traffic headaches.

Here are the closures to watch out for:

IB Kennedy ramp to WB I-290

  • Ramp CLOSED Friday 8 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m.
  • DETOUR: SB Dan Ryan, Exit at 18th, re-enter IB Dan Ryan to WB I-290

WB Congress: Canal to Morgan

  • Reduced to one lane Friday 11 p.m. to Sunday 2 p.m.

IB Dan Ryan:  26th to Harrison

  • Right lane closed 9 p.m. Saturday – 11 p.m. Saturday
  • Two right lanes closed 11 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday

The closures are necessary so that crews can prepare to open the new flyover ramp from the IB Dan Ryan to WB I-290. Construction on the new ramp started in September 2014 and it will open to traffic this Sunday.   Traffic will be able to use one lane of the new ramp until the second lane can open in Summer 2018.

When the flyover ramp opens on Sunday, closures associated with the project will be lifted:

I-55 ramps to IB Dan Ryan

  • Ramps will be restored to two lanes

IB Dan Ryan approaching the Circle

  • All lanes will reopen

Roosevelt Rd entrance ramp to WB I-290

  • Ramp will reopen

After the flyover ramp opens, work will continue on the Jane Byrne Interchange Project.  Current closures in place for work on WB I-290 from the old Post Office to Racine will remain.

Current closures that will remain include:

WB I-290 from Wells to Halsted

  • Reduced to two lanes

EB I-290 Halsted to old Post Office

  • Left lane closed

Canal ramp to WB I-290

  • Closed

These closures will stay in place for this phase of the Jane Byre Interchange Project, which will be completed in Summer 2018. At that time, the second lane of the new flyover bridge will open.
