If you decide to take advantage of United Airlines' new, Basic Economy fare, pack lightly.

Travelers will only be allowed to bring on board just one personal item that fits under the seat in front of them, such as a purse, backpack or briefcase. They won't get to use the overhead bin beginning next year.

Basic Economy travelers who want to check a bag will have to pay United's regular fee of $25 for one bag, and $35 for a second bag.

United is offering Basic Economy fares to compete with airlines like Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant.
