CHICAGO --Keshawn Slaughter was walking home from the store with his 11-year-old stepson around 5:20 p.m. in the 11600 block of South Bishop Monday when a white vehicle pulled up, and someone inside opened fired at them.

Both the 26-year-old Slaughter and his stepson were hit. Slaughter was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center. It was just two weeks shy of his 27th birthday. His stepson remains in serious condition after being shot in the shoulder.

A large group of family members gathered outside the hospital Monday night. Relatives say the boy is improving. They also said the West Pullman neighborhood where the shooting occurred is generally a quiet area. Slaughter and his family had moved there because they thought it was safe.

No arrest has been made, and the incident is under investigation.
