MELROSE PARK, Ill. -- A woman was killed when a Union Pacific freight train hit and dragged a car near the Melrose Park Metra stop and police station.

The accident happened just before 2 a.m. Friday at 19th Ave. and Main in Melrose Park.

Firefighters say it appears the driver of the car went around the crossing gates before it was hit.

The Union Pacific train hit the car, and dragged it four blocks to 15th and Railroad Ave. in Maywood.

Two people were inside of the car at the time of the accident. The man behind the wheel was conscious when transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Firefighters had to extricate a female passenger from the car. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identifies her as 21-year-old Jocelynn Morales of Bellwood.

Union Pacific crews were able to remove the wreckage in time to clear the tracks for the morning Metra commuter train schedule.
