MERRIONETTE PARK, Ill. -- Officials said the suspicious package they were investigating in front of a southwest suburban store turned out to be a fake bomb.

Police said the suspicious package in front of the Tobacco City in Merrionette Park, Ill., was a Pringles can that was ticking and made to look like a pipe bomb.

Police said shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, someone, possibly a teenager, opened the door of the Tobacco City and threw the device inside. Someone inside the store quickly tossed it outside and called police.

The suspect took off running and businesses in the surrounding area were evacuated for hours as officials investigated.

Police said they are reviewing surveillance video while they continue to investigate.

They said a second person, also possibly a teenager, may be involved.

No one was injured.
