CHICAGO — A 2-year-old boy has died after he and a pregnant woman were struck by a minivan while crossing the street on the South Side on Thursday evening.

The accident happened near 71st Street and Damen Avenue around 6 p.m. Thursday, according to police. Surveillance videos shows a red minivan turning south on to Damen Avenue as the woman and child begin crossing the street. The pair — an aunt and nephew — are holding hands when they are hit. The boy appears to get run over.

The boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He later died.

On Friday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy as 2-year-old Kiare Woods of the 7600 block of South Aberdeen Street in Auburn Gresham.

The woman sustained an arm injury.
