Bail denied for man charged with unprovoked attack on woman riding the Red Line
CHICAGO — Bail was denied Sunday for a man charged with an unprovoked attack on a woman on the Red Line last week.
Prosecutors say 28-year-old Derrick McMath punched a 67-year-old woman in the face as she read her Kindle on the Red Line last Thursday. The attack caused a severe rupture that officials now say will require one of her eyes to be removed.
Surveillance cameras captured the attack that took place near the 1500 block of West Jarvis Avenue. In a community alert, police shared photos of the suspect in the incident and described it as a “completely unprovoked” attack.
Police say officers recognized McMath after he ran out of a store without paying for a pair of shoes and was arrested Saturday. He now faces a felony count of Aggravated Battery and a misdemeanor count of Retail Theft. He was previously convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in March 2008.
In court Sunday, the judge called McMath a “danger to the community,” and ordered he be detained until another hearing later in the week.
