RICHTON PARK, Ill. -- One man was killed after a police-involved shooting in the south suburbs.

Officials said an armed robbery suspect was shot and killed after what police described as a "running gun battle." The incident started in Park Forest Monday around 2 p.m. in the 400 block of Suwanee Street where police were responding to reports of a person shot in the head.

Police said the person shot was able to give them a description of the suspect. Police said they found a man that fit the description walking toward Richton Park. When they asked the man to stop so they could question him, they said he began running and the "gun battle" took place. Several shots were fired.

The suspect was shot by police and responding officers performed CPR and called paramedics, officials said. However, the man was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released. Park Forest police said the suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene.

Three officers were involved in the shooting. No officers were struck in the exchange of gunfire. All the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave and the shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.

The person who was originally shot in the head was taken to Christ Hospital in serious to critical condition.
