Man charged in murder of Northfield attorney was also targeting sister, prosecutors say

NORTHFIELD, Ill. — A 66-year-old man who's charged with killing a prominent attorney in Northfield is also accused of trying to shoot his sister, according to prosecutors.

John Gately III, 66, was charged in the shooting death of 72-year-old Steven Shapiro. Police said Shapiro was found fatally shot inside a home on the 200 block of Latrobe Avenue in Northfield around 8 p.m. Monday. Sharpiro was reportedly Gately's brother-in-law.

The shooting led police to Winnetka where Gately barricaded himself inside a building near Tower and Green Bay roads. The standoff lasted for hours as police and SWAT teams attempted to capture the suspect.

Gately is also accused of trying to shoot his sister. Cook County prosecutors said he poses a threat to his relatives given his documented history of domestic violence, battery and multiple DUIs. A Cook County judge agreed judge agreed to hold him without bond.

Officials said Gately was angry with his adult siblings who were embroiled in a legal dispute over family assets. His sister, Joan Shapiro agreed to support Gately until the lawsuit could be resolved, investigators say. Shapiro paid her brother's rent but prosecutors said the arrangement soon unraveled. Officials said she told Gately she would no longer just give him money. which appeared to set Gately off.

Prosecutors allege Gately showed up at the Shapiros' home late Monday and asked to see his sister. When Stephen Shapiro said she wasn't available, Gately took out a .22-caliber weapon and shot the man. His gun misfired when he attempted to shoot his sister. She escaped and called police.

Stephen Shapiro's colleagues at Mayer Brown referred to him as a "superhero" lawyer who founded the law firm's Supreme Court and appellate practice. Shapiro also once served in the U.S. solicitor general's office. He argued several cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

A memorial service will take place in Winnetka on Monday.
