7 people shot, wounded on Chicago lakefront near Diversey Harbor

CHICAGO —  Seven people were shot and wounded on the lakefront early Saturday morning, just steps away from Diversey Harbor.

Police said there was a confrontation between two groups near Fullerton Parkway and Lake Shore Drive around 3 a.m. One of the groups was leaving the lakefront while another was walking toward it.

Police said words were exchanged between the groups and then both sides pulled out guns and fired at each other.

Medics at the scene of the shooting worked to stabilize the victims before putting them into ambulances.

Three of the people were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in conditions ranging from serious to critical. Three other victims were sent to Northwestern in conditions ranging from serious to fair.

Police said most of the victims sustained non-life threatening injuries, with the exception of a 46-year-old woman who was hit in the chest and self-transported herself to Holy Cross Hospital in serious condition.

Five of the seven people shot were women.
Police say some of the shooting victims may not have been involved in the fight.

“It sounds like some of them were random victims in the area, so we want to remind the public it’s 3:30 in the morning and technically the park is closed," Ofc. Jose Jara said. "Unfortunately, it was very hot last night and people were out and the incident took place.”

The area around the incident was closed this morning to vehicle traffic.

A community activist said police were looking at cameras in the area and at least 12 shell casings were found.

Residents are aware this shooting is one of several instances of recent crime in the area.

"Drive by shooting type situations, the carjacking situations are happening more often in in our neighborhood," Carol Gesior, Lakeview resident, said.

Following the incident, Chicago Office-Emergency Management placed a new camera with a license plate reader not far from the scene on Cannon Drive. The shooting was captured on various police pod cameras and investigators are reviewing the footage.

Police say the two gunmen who started the shooting got away on foot. No one is in custody and they’re asking anyone with information to contact Area North Detectives.

Police said it is unclear if charges will be filed for this incident.
