CHICAGO – After a four-month experiment, Chicago’s electric scooter experiment is ending Tuesday evening.

Whether you loved them or hated them, they add another public transportation option for Chicagoans.

“I use it more to get around the West Loop,” David Cunningham said. “I use it to get to different offices, restaurants around the West Loop.”

During the four-month program, nearly 800,000 electric scooter trips were taken in Chicago. The scooters are operated by using a phone app, and typically cost $1 to unlock and 15-cents a minute to ride.

As city officials weigh whether to make scooters permanent, they’ll consider the following factors.

  • Ridership Data

  • Community Feedback

  • Injury Reports

  • Complaints

  • Tickets

  • Survey results

Active Transportation Alliance, a transportation advocacy group, developed an extensive report on the results of the pilot program.

They believe the scooters were a success, but is offering some ideas on how to curb the clutter when riders leave them on sidewalks.

"Sidewalk clutter has been the big issue in Chicago and in cities around the world and around the country that have these scooters,” Kyle Whitehead, with Active Transportation Alliance said. "Getting left in the public way even if they’re parked properly, they’re knocked over, moved over.”

The organization is suggestion riders park in a designated area, like a Divvy station.

They also believe the city should keep scooters off of biking and walking trails. Instead, Whitehead encouraged the city to make them available at more public transportation hubs.

The city will now analyze safety and transportation results to determine whether to launch a permanent e-scooter program.

They want your feedback in an online survey you can fill out here.
